Cyclone Yasi similar to Hurricane Katrina

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Monster Cyclone Yasi is closing in on the Queensland Coast with her outer feeder bands now pushing over land.

The storm has strengthened significantly in the past 24 hours and currently has a similar to strength to Hurricane Katrina shortly before she made landfall.

The Americans use a different system to the Australians so a Cat 5 here doesn’t necessarily match a Cat 5 there.  However as Katrina weakened before landfall (to a Cat 3) Yasi is still building.

Check out this graphic that shows the difference in category ratings.

WeatherWatch.co.nz will have extensive coverage this evening as Cyclone Yasi starts to affect land.

what is the predicted track of this cyclone? Will Sydney, Brisbane area be affected? I have my son flying in to Sydney on Friday morning from USA.

Hi there – it’s going to head directly inland and towards Alice Springs (believe it or not!).  Sydney will not be impacted by this cyclone.

This is so incredibly sad for Queensland. Although it is in a different part I think they have been hammered enough.

Actually. I think Townsville was affected by flooding and now will be affected by Yasi 🙁 I am so lucky to be on the Gold Coast through all this but my thoughts and prayers are with North Queenslanders.
