Tauranga, Rotorua and Whitianga have been hit by torrential rain inside the last hour with more than 25mm of rain falling.

Last night Northland copped flooding in numerous places as reports came into WeatherWatch.co.nz of very heavy rain being experienced, flooded streams and rivers, slips, roads being cut off by floodwaters and a few homes being inundated with water.

Winds have also increased with south west gales topping 100kph over parts of Northland and the outer islands of the Auckland region.

We live in the centre of Katikati (40kms north of Tauranga) and have had 116.1 mls in 12 hours, no wind until this morning, just had some good gusts. Was expecting the wind to be stronger over night?

Got a couple hours sleep this morning, thanks.

Has been a long night, but we knew this storm was different from the others so worth the long hours.

Our heaviest rain was about 2 hours ago – overnight have had 95 mm. Winds light to calm. LOTS of surface flooding locally – our ground was still saturated from last weekend’s rains.
