A Christchurch man’s plan to decorate the city’s road cones for Christmas has gone viral.
The orange road cone has become somewhat symbolic of the new existence of quake-rattled residents.
Local man Henry Sunderland says he posted the idea of everyone adding some festive decorations to the traffic cones on Facebook.
“I know of at least 12, 13, 14 locations now where Santa hats are popping up, where there’s flowers have been painted… I can see them at the beginning of Sumner,” he says.
Henry Sunderland says it’s just a little bit of tongue in cheek rebellion for a city that’s had a pretty horrible year.

Christchurch cones are looking cheerful.
Also from Christchurch from Grant “Just so everyone knows, I have a CHRISTMAS TREE in my living room (not a holiday tree), my kids are getting CHRISTMAS PRESENTS (not holiday gifts) and we will eat CHRISTMAS DINNER (not a holiday meal), and I will attend a CHRISTMAS PARTY (not a holiday party). I will also very cheerfully wish you a MERRY CHRISTMAS! (not… happy holidays). By the way, if you want to have a Happy Hanukah , by all means do, I respect that. If you want to have a Blessed Kwanzaa, I also respect that. I want to have a Merry Christmas, so I ask YOU to respect that! “
