Canterbury Churches have $8 mill damage

> From the WeatherWatch archives

The Canterbury earthquake is estimated to have caused $8 million worth of damage to Presbyterian churches in the area.

28 church properties were damaged in the quake, and insurers are working with the churches to process claims.

The historic St Paul’s Trinity Pacific Presbyterian Church, which had a fire last year, suffered further damage in the quake.

The Right Reverend, Peter Cheyne, says while he’s concerned to see so many places of worship damaged, most will be rebuilt or replaced.

Many of the churches are holding services in their halls for now, or joining churches which haven’t been damaged.
