The weather today again sees high pressure lying over the top of NZ and deep low pressure remains well south of the country. This placement means the westerly airflow continues across NZ in many regions.
Let’s get into the forecast for Wednesday to start with…
RAIN:
Most of NZ is dry again today. A few isolated showers may develop around the lower half of the South Island and rain in Fiordland.
WIND:
West to north-west winds pick up in the lower South Island but winds are lighter in many regions and from varying directions. The SWer in Auckland continues.
TEMPERATURES:
Milder inland and in the lower South Island.
END OF NOVEMBER/START OF DECEMBER:
Thursday is back to typical windy westerly spring weather as a cold front moves into and up the South Island. High pressure remains over Northland, but strong to gale westerly quarter winds move up the country along with rain for the West Coast with some heavy falls moving northwards there. Some rain or showers will make it in to Southland and Otago and a cooler SW change spreads up the South Island bringing showers or patchy rain. Severe NW gales are possible in the lower South Island and around the Southern Alps on Thursday. The North Island is dry or mainly dry with windy westerlies, possibly severe gale around exposed parts of the lower North Island.
By Friday high starts to return with lighter winds and drier skies – although some cloud and isolated showers are possible. That high looks to cross NZ on Saturday bringing some cloud and a few isolated showers into the upper half of the North Island, otherwise dry.
On Sunday, December 1st, the high likely drifts a little to our east with warm weather nationwide.
Next week kicks off with settled weather almost nationwide, just some rain around Fiordland on Monday.
Tuesday is similar but windier nor’westers return from Wellington and Wairarapa southwards.
