New Zealand is squashed between a low south east of Dunedin and a high west of the West Coast – the southerly air flow across the country is producing some stunningly low temperatures for the first week of January.
WeatherWatch.co.nz forecast this week’s cold snap a week ago – but even we’re surprised with just how cold it is this morning in many places – especially inland and southern areas!
Some of the lowest temperatures as of 6:30am via WeatherWatch & Wunderground:
Hamilton: 6
Taupo: 4
Central Plateau: 2
Rotorua: 6
Hastings: 5
Dannevirke: 3
Upper Hutt: 4
South Karori: 3
Inland Canterbury: 2 or 3
Twizel: 0
Wanaka: 2
Most main centres from Waikato southwards are in the single digits as of 6:30am.
Warmer weather will gradually return over the next few days to many areas as wind flows change – but some people may still find it a little cool in the south and west of both islands with highs only in the mid to late teens.
