Low pressure covered a large part of NZ on Boxing Day but high pressure is moving in from the west by Friday across the South Island. Low pressure shifts east of the North Island and powers up – bringing gales and areas of heavy rain in the North Island’s north-east, drier and windy for many other regions.
There are ORANGE severe weather warnings in force for Hawke’s Bay to Gisborne/Tairawhiti to East Cape for heavy rain.
Windy weather is expected across the North Island on Friday, with gales possible in exposed areas, easing Saturday.
