Body pulled from truck which plunged into swollen river

> From the WeatherWatch archives

A body has been pulled from the cab of a truck, found submerged in a Hawkes Bay river.

A 47-year-old truckie from Taihape was reported missing by his wife last night after he failed to return from a trip to Hawkes Bay.

Calls from his wife and radio calls from his employer – Farmer’s Transport in Feilding – had gone unanswered.

At about 8am today, another truck driver noticed marks on the road about 1km downstream from Springvale Bridge, 30 metres above Moawhango River and saw a truck submerged in the river.

The police dive squad from Wellington was called in to search the river, which is swollen and flowing fast due to heavy rain.

Members of the squad found the body of a man in the truck’s cab.

The body has been sent to Taihape to be identified, and so far police can not confirm who it is.
