Big storms batter Brisbane and SE Queensland

> From the WeatherWatch archives

It’s been a dramatic day for Queenslanders as thunder, lightning strikes and hail have lashed the state.

Strong winds have also pummelled Brisbane’s CBD today as authorities warn of severe weather across south-east Queensland again this afternoon.

Severe thunderstorms have impacted the Brisbane, Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Darling Downs and Wide Bay regions.

Parts of Brisbane were hit with hail, shops in Paddington were flooded and the ABC’s Southbank office was forced to evacuate as the storm crossed the city earlier this afternoon.

Power crews are working to restore power to around 11,000 homes across the region.

Mike Swanston from Energex says there were 4,000 direct hits from lightning.

“We recorded 4,000 lightening strikes directly to our power network as that storm passed over Brisbane,” he said.

We have about 91 reports of wires down across the Brisbane area and out towards Ipswich.

John Hannan from Emergency Management Queensland is advising residents to have food, water and gas supplies and to stay indoors if storms affect their area.
