Avalanche risk in South Island

> From the WeatherWatch archives

A skiing incident at Coronet Peak, has prompted danger warnings from mountain operators.

A ski patroller was caught in an avalanche at the back of the ski area at Back Bowls yesterday afternoon. His companion alerted others in the area, but the buried patroller was fully equipped and able to dig himself out unaided.

He was not injured, but his employer, NZSki, says it is a timely reminder of the risks of being on the mountain.

Signs are placed in avalanche prone areas and skiers and snowboarders are warned to take notice of them
