It’s warm in the east of the North Island with a windy nor’wester, it’s cooling down on the western side of the North Island – and the South Island is already underneath the incoming cold change.
By the end of Thursday all of New Zealand will be under the colder south to south west change – which fades out again by the weekend as high pressure moves in. However, WeatherWatch.co.nz forecasts warmer sub-tropical winds likely returning again later in the month.
The change from warmer air to colder air today is sparking plenty of thunderstorms over the Tasman Sea and more isolated ones over New Zealand. Not all you see out at sea will move in to NZ, others will newly form over land – either way it shows the unsettled set up which peaks over the next 24 hours, then fades on Friday.
Autumn is all about summer slowly fading away and hints of winter starting to come in.

Warmer subtropical winds at the end of the month. Does that mean another atmospheric river? I really can’t handle another one.

Hi Aaron
Long range models will change around a little between now and then, something to keep in the back of your mind perhaps but don’t bank on it. Latest long ranges models don’t really have an atmospheric river in there, but we shall see.

Hi there,
Been really enjoying these warmer days lately, just wondering if these come back anytime soon after the cold change comes through? Cheers
