Australia: Warm and stormy in Victoria

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Melbourne had its warmest April weekend in 8 years, finishing with a few rumbles.

The mercury rose across Victoria on the weekend as northerly winds brought a warm airmass into the state. Melbourne reached 28 degrees on Saturday and 27 on Sunday, making it the warmest April weekend since 2005. In Victoria, maximum temperatures were above average in every location ranging from 32 in parts of the Mallee to 11 degrees at Mt Hotham.

During the afternoon thunderstorms sparked up in a weak low pressure trough. Thunderstorms brought up to 21mm in the North East and 18mm at Kilmore Gap. The city gained 5mm during the afternoon showers and storms.

Southeastern suburbs of Melbourne missed out on the showers and storms as they began in the western suburbs and moved to the northeast.

Today will remain warm in the north of the state, while the south will be cooler due to the arrival of southerly winds.

Thunderstorms are likely again today, particularly in the eastern districts on the ranges and in the North Central district. The Central district is at risk of storms, but mainly in the northeast. Those in the Mallee should also keep an eye out for thunderstorm development during the afternoon.

Tomorrow, storms are less likely and should be confined to the eastern districts as the trough moves east. On Wednesday storms become unlikely across Victoria.
