The Auckland Civil Defence Emergency Coordination Centre (ECC) has transitioned from response to recovery following the tornado that struck Albany yesterday afternoon.
If people require welfare assistance or information about buildings or properties damaged by the tornado they can call 0800 463 010.
Auckland Civil Defence Controller Clive Manley says building inspectors are continuing to assess the damage to commercial and residential properties.
“We are working with engineers and police to check all the Albany Mega Centre commercial buildings. We will open these up to the public over the next couple of hours in incremental phases. Public safety is our number one priority.”
Car park entrances at Westfield and MegaCentre remain closed.
An Administration Centre set up in the vicinity of Placemakers (Police Command Vehicle) to assist people with recovery of cars. People wanting to collect their cars can report to the Police Command Vehicle or phone the North Shore Policing Centre for further information: 09 477 5000.
