A mostly dry Sunday – rain coming from south

> From the WeatherWatch archives

It’s a mostly dry Sunday across the nation today with light winds for many areas, especially in the north.

Higher air pressure will drift across the North Island today bringing cloudy periods but long sunny spells.  The North Island is expeted to be mostly dry today with temperatures average to above average.

In the South Island conditions are starting off calm and dry for many but winds are going to build up today as a front moves north.

In Dunedin expect clouds to thicken, patches of rain later and winds to pick up. Winds may pick up in a number of exposed areas over the South Island and lower North Island today – but nothing major is expected.

Northerlies will strengthen in Wellington tonight too with rain likely after dark or overnight.

On the West Coast rain is already light and drizzly for some as it slowly starts to move in – it will likely become heavier later today and tonight.

Patchy rain or showers will move north to the North Island overnight then break up across Monday.

Hi, I see Metservice has issued a heavy rain warning for the eastern South Island from about midnight tonight in the south and 0600 further north. This seems to be at odds with your forecast for these regions which are somewhat more optimistic! Is it still your take on this coming system that it is less severe than Metservice would have us believe? Thanks.

We expect some heavy rain tomorrow about the southeastern corner of the South Island. The article above is mainly dealing with today.

Understood re the dry Sunday story, I was referring to the WW extended forecast (for Chch in particular) which calls for sunny spells and westerlies easing by tomorrow evening with 10% chance of precip and cloudy with the odd shower on Tuesday. However WW also states periods of rain for Wednesday with SW so maybe timings for this weather are still uncertain? This of interest to Chch folk given our recent flooding events.

Latest up to date forecast for Christchurch is up now.

We expect some rain on Tuesday, it won’t be a little bit but not expecting heaps of rain either. Agree it is of concern to Chch residents, but this bout of rain doesn’t look to be as bad as recent lots. 🙂
