900 trees to be planted this week

> From the WeatherWatch archives

This week is all about keeping New Zealand clean and green.

Community groups nationwide will be planting nearly 900 trees in the next few days as part of New Zealand’s first official Arbor week.

Event organiser, Keep New Zealand Beautiful’s, Joanne Powell says anyone wanting to get involved can register on their website.

And she hopes a number of people will take part.

“We’re providing funding for seedlings in different areas all through the nation over this week.

“Enhancing air quality, drainage, beautifying – all sorts of great positive reasons for it.”

Powell’s encouraging Aucklanders to get involved with today’s Takapuna planting, which started at 10am.

“We need to walk the talk. We can’t just say, y’eah clean green New Zealand’ – we need to actually action that ad do something about it.

“And it’s easy to get involved. It’s not going to cost you any money. All it costs you is a bit of time and energy.”

Those interested in getting involved can register on the Keep New Zealand Beautiful website.
