A major earthquake has hit Japan this evening creating a massive tsunami up to 10 metres high which is currently roaring down the coastline taking boats, cars and powerlines with it.
This is unfolding right now.
It is late in the afternoon on Friday local time.
USGS has just said the earthquake has been upgraded to an 8.9 quake at a depth of 24 kms to the north east of Japan.
CNN reporting Tsunami Watches now in force for eastern Russia, Hawaii, Indonesia, Marshall Islands and Papua New Guinea and the Philippines.
NZ’s Civil Defence currently has no watches or warnings for New Zealand.
Red dot indicates where this evening’s quake was.
