A magnitude 6.4 earthquake has struck off the coast in the Bay of Plenty.
It hit 90 km north of White Island at 5.14pm at a depth of 280 km.
The deeper the quake is the less damage they cause says WeatherWatch.co.nz. This is clearly illustrated with the Canterbury quake which was just 10kms deep.
There are reports it was felt around the North Island.

Geonet shows some people near CHCH felt it but Christchurch Quake Live showed a small quake near Lake Ellesmere so it was more likely that one that some felt.

Felt it here in Kaukapakapa, it was just a light wobble. My friend thought it was a truck that had hit the house slowly as we had trucks all day long over our road.
