As of 2024 we will no longer be publishing questions related to weather forecasts if they are answered via our hyper-local hourly & 10 day forecasts, weather maps and regular daily and monthly weather & climate videos.
Weβre a small NZ business with limited resources to respond to general weather questions. Our social media pages may be helpful to you, especially if you want to often talk (or groan!) about your local weather.Β You can find more resources from us here if thatβs your thing.

On the videos from last Wednesday-Thursday, the maps showed almost no rain, and it was said that the weather modelsβ maps have been βflip floppingβ frequently between dry AND wet, yet all forecasts on both the website and the app showed
only steady increase in the chance and amount of rain from 30 to 50mm (no changing to dry AND wet weather as suggested in the video). Why there is such a huge difference between the app and your video forecasts? Though for now both sources are aligned, but wondering why the differences occurred on those two days.

Hi there, it was simply the run of one model (an outlier) used in our videos (and had also been a bit βback and forthβ in the days leading up to that video) β but our website(s) & app update hourly using hundreds of computer modelling/ensembles added to it. The data on our site is more accurate than the maps we use.
Also, April is notorious for sudden lows deepening as high pressure systems over NZ move through much faster and come in different shapes β making longer range forecasts much more difficult/changeable than previous months during summer.

Really confused by the video forecast on Thursday 10th April, showing little or no rain for Northland, yet the daily forecasts show up to 100mm total for next week?

Morning Roger. I think youβll see why in todayβs video β the data has been flip flopping in the long range maps for a number of days now, todayβs change is one of the biggest Iβve seen in a while. It makes sense (to me anyway) why itβs flip flopping so hopefully I can explain that today.
