Your Saturday evening forecast – cloudy all over

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Thanks to the low pressure system that will be brewing to the northeast of the North Island this evening, the top half of the country can expect a damp evening tonight with brisk winds from the south or southeast.

While Wellington can expect a few showers to develop this evening there won’t be any torrential rain about, and this is much the case for Auckland too in terms of there not being downpours of rain with this system.  As winds swing more southerly tonight the light showers in Auckland will ease back overnight.

The sheltering effect of the Coromandel Peninsula and to some extent, way over to the east, the Hawkes Bay and Gisborne Ranges block most of the rain to our largest city. Only the odd light shower or spit generally makes it through on these occasions.

There is some light rain in the south and south east of the city, including the airport.  It seems that is the extent of the heaviest rain today – so a little more than last Saturday, but not by much!

Christchurch and Dunedin will have cloudy skies with fresh northeasterly breezes this evening, conditions will be mainly dry although Christchurch could see some drizzle later on. It will be a bit chilly feeling with temperatures floating around the high single figure mark.
