We’re just over a month away from the big day this year and it seems that the current Spring weather pattern could be with us right up until Christmas.
It got us thinking here at WeatherWatch.co.nz, what type of weather is ideal for you?
For those who like to barbeque, a warm day with not too much would make a lot of sense however for those who like to go boating later in the day, calm conditions would probably be the most ideal.
There are some who like to go tramping on the day itself would you believe and cool temperatures and overcast skies are often the best type of conditions for a hike at altitude.
Now for those who like to take a dip in the ocean, there’s nothing worse than strong winds causing sea spray and adding to the chill so little wind with sunny skies would probably be tailor made for a stint at the beach.
Now for some kids who get a kite from Santa, of course the lack of wind is a bit of a problem so a steady breeze would certainly lift the Xmas spirit.
Is rain good at any time of the day during Xmas?
Well perhaps you wouldn’t think so but if it’s a real scorcher, a brief summer shower can just cool things down a tad before the sun and warmth reappears.
We’re all after particular types of weather on Christmas Day and just as important, if not moreso, is Boxing Day itself and the days up until the early part of the new year.
This Christmas season a weak to moderate La Nina looks to be at work and even though the recent and current winds seem to show little sign of letting up this week and perhaps next, hopefully within 4 weeks time the winds will have lost much of their puff and the weather is set to deliver a present just ideal for everyone.

I wish for freakishly cold, moderately rainy, and occasionally stormy – developing up to maximun intensity Christmas day ( not enough to flood or damage anything). Spent too much time in the Northern hemisphere! Then Boxing Day be the turn around heralding a week of glorious NZ summer sun. A big ask – but no harm in dreaming – just don’t want to be hot and sleepless around Christmas – we work everyday of the year but Public holidays.

Cloudy and a little cool to strat with the the cloudy lifting as the day progresses and a warm balmy later afrternoon perfect for the sit down full on cooked lunch and stunning for the evening bbq with the ability to sit outside. temperatures of somewhere between 20-25.
Now if i could just wish my xmas shopping to be done too

The SAM index has been negative of late, and helps explain the incidence of turbulent westerlies. However I see one projection of it trending upwards very soon – if this holds, matters could be different by the start of December.

On the actual day I prefer anticyclonic gloom all day and even rain with colder conditions,if you fuss over the stove etc on the day (which many must do) also it has a better feeling than sweating away enjoying the day with others.
