Windy Saturday for many; warm in north, cool in south

Windy conditions are prevailing in most urban centres today as a westerly flow strengthens.

Starting in the north and winds across Auckland are averaging around 35km/h with gusts up to 70km/h in exposed areas.

Tauranga, Rotorua, Whakatane and Taupo have similar winds with gusts to 50km/h.

Napier has a warm nor’wester gusting to 63km/h and it’s currently 20 degrees.

New Plymouth and Hawera have a 45km/h westerly gust to 65km/h and a cool 14 and 12 degrees respectively.

Westerlies are near gale force in Wanganui with a 40km/h nor’wester in the capital.

In the South Island Kaikoura has a strong, cold, southerly that is 10km/h shy of gale force (gale is 62km/h) and gusts to 70km/h.  It’s currently just 11 degrees, while Christchurch has only 9 degrees with westerlies reaching 45km/h.

Invercargil has 10 degrees and a 44km/h westerly gusting 67km/h.
