There’s been talk of winds topping 150km/h over parts of Northland and Auckland since last night and big gusts have peaked in some isolated areas.
Weatherwatch predicted 160km/h in very exposed areas but these were remote and Auckland city wasn’t going to see 130+.
Winds have risen above 100km/h across the last 24 hours over some parts of the north and courtesy of Jenny, with a list of private weather stations, here is some data that’s been collated.
Feel free to add more information if you have any to hand.
Awhitu 112.8km/h
Dargaville 106.3km/h
Awhitu 93.2km/h
Wellington 90km/h
Dargarville 89.5km/h
Parafield Airfield 82.8km/h
Christchurch 70.7km/h
Dargaville Airfield 68.5km/h
Opotiki 66.2km/h
Timaru 64.4km/h
Russell 62.8km/h
Kaipara 61.1km/h
Hunua 59.6km/h

Blustery conditions are still possible throughout the next 12 hours however Tuesday should see a gradual decrease across much of New Zealand.

On a hill 6km from whangamata. Worst wind ever, stripped the bush of leaves rocked the house tore up some louvres. No way to prove it but it was Hurricane force 150km at least.

I moved to a townhouse on a ridge above Lake Pupuke ( no houses in front) 12 years ago, this was the worst wind I have experienced. The trees were going crazy and I was concerned my bedroom windows would be smashed by tree or blow in. Much worse from when 80k winds were predicted. Camped downstairs from 3.30 am.

We are at Waipipi just down the coast from Awhitu, and the wind felt like more than 112 kph. Have had 130 and 140 before and some gusts actually felt that strong. What ever it was the house shook!!

Here in Gisborne the gusts woke us up and we thought we had a weak earthquake. The whole house was a rocking!

The weather in Whitby has settled into what I’d call – a stormy mode, just in the past 2 hours or so.
The wind has picked up from the South East and the rain is driving in sheets looking across the valley where I live, I love it, more please, does feel chilly though as I open the window ever so slightly to get the feel of it.
Not sure what the wind is gusting, nothing spectacular.
I was at Wellington Airport as the Southerly belted into the place with wind and tremendous rainfall in a brief period, I think a few planes had to circle before landing as the weather was so bad.
Don’t ya love Autumn?
Cheers
