Isobars over the whole of the South Island and lower North Island are fairly crunched up, bringing a gusty westerly quarter airflow.
Through Cook Strait and about Southland and the Catlins area, west to northwest winds will likely be strong in the afternoon – with gales possible.
Many interior parts of the South Island will likely expect gusty west to northwest winds, so keep an eye out and be aware of changing conditions, especially if you’re in an area prone to westerly quarter winds.
