Heavy rain is causing problems on roads throughout the Wellington region prompting calls for motorists to stay home if possible.

It’s been raining consistently overnight and throughout this morning, bringing down slips in the hill suburbs and causing minor flooding.

Gray’s Road in Porirua has been closed, and emergency services are currently at Raroa Road in Aro Valley where a bank is threatening to come down.

Police say motorists should delay unnecessary travel if they can.
