Here’s what is making the weather headlines this weekend….
SETTLED WEATHER FINALLY
High pressure brings settled weather to most of New Zealand this weekend. There will be a little cloud for some, mainly western regions, perhaps even a light shower or two.
Enjoy the calm as the first half of next week has more cold fronts in store.
WARM IN THE EAST MON / TUE
While yes cold fronts start to move over the country from Monday next week the flow in the east doesn’t really change southwest till later on Tuesday and overnight into Wednesday.
Before the flow changes to the southwest we will have a west to northwest airflow meaning temperatures for eastern regions will likely get into the mid to late teens on Monday and Tuesday.
WEATHER ON SUNDAY
High pressure brings mainly settled weather, a little cloud for some western regions may bring a light shower or two however.
North Island
A mix of sun and cloud for the upper North Island, a light shower or two especially in the morning when skies may be a bit cloudier then drying out into the afternoon with sunny areas more likely, winds from the southwest. A few morning clouds in the east then mostly sunny. Bay Of Plenty has a mainly sunny day. Frosty to start about the Central North Island.
South Island
Sunny for most however South Westland has cloud and Fiordland has showers. A cold start to the day especially inland with frosts. Light winds, afternoon east to northeast breezes for Canterbury.

I think serious questions need to be asked as the forecast is for cloudless sunny day in Chch. We’ve had a frost overnight and you’d expect a fine day following but no the sky is covered in grey homogenitus cloud. There’s no chance of any sunshine today. So many forecasts are wrong not slightly but completely. When will we keep pretending this is normal?

A few things:
Firstly: We’re not forecasting a cloudless day – see our cloud graphs here: https://www.ruralweather.co.nz/forecasts/Christchurch,%20Canterbury
Secondly: NZ is called Aotearoa – land of the long white cloud – for a reason. It’s a very cloudy country, but our mountains and ranges can break that cloud up and make for sunshine (depending on wind direction). A slight shift in wind can make for sunny then cloudy weather very quickly – it’s as simple as that. (and when underneath that cloud it’s more grey than white!).
Thirdly – cold nights with milder sea temperatures nearby – can create a layer of gloomy cloud that can sometimes ‘break’ a sunnier forecast. This happens a lot in the mornings.
This is all normal for coastal Canterbury and is a continually challenging part of forecasting on an island in the middle of the Roaring Forties.
