Forecast for Sunday & new week: Calmer, drier, high pressure mixed with more wind & wet

Sunday weather eases in regions that have recently had especially windy, wet or hot conditions – with lighter winds for most on Sunday, but still some showers across the country. Dry or mainly dry weather moves into Westland thanks to high pressure. Some eastern parts of the South Island will feel a 10 degree cool down as far as maximum temperatures are concerned, after a hotter past couple of days.

On Monday cooler (or slightly cooler) sou-westers spread into more regions. A few showers continue in Southland and a few showers remain over the upper North Island. Isolated showers along the west are also possible.

But by Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday high pressure looks to once again move into the country bringing calm weather and mostly dry skies – although showers, some heavy, are still likely in the upper half of the North Island. Eastern North Island regions (Wairarapa, Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne) will feel the cooler air as we move into the week, with maximum temperatures down around 10 degrees compared to recent days.

Low pressure and a cold front look to come in later on Thursday from the west and bring an unsettled end to the week on Friday and a windy and mild weekend looks likely next weekend – at this early stage.

We’ll have more details in our Monday weather video update about the next week of spring weather.
