A cold front moves up NZ on Sunday with warmest air over northern and eastern parts of the North Island.
Highs in the mid to late 20s are possible in the eastern North Island ahead of the cold front.
But Sunday’s front is going to drop temperatures nationwide. The cold front reaches Wellington during the day on Sunday (check your hourly forecasts for more precision on timing as it may shift from the time of this story) bringing rain and a slight dip in temperatures.
Further south and some places drop several degrees in the South Island on Sunday from where they were on Saturday. Christchurch is over 10 degrees colder Sunday with a high of 17 (only 14 on Tuesday!). Dunedin is only 15c after being in the 20s on Saturday. Invercargill is only just making a high in the teens on Sunday, by Tuesday it may only be 10c at the warmest point (but back to 20c by Friday).
El Nino encourages more West to SW winds for NZ – and so it’s not surprising to be seeing a spring weather pattern carrying on through December. For those in the eastern North Island this will be very welcome – but for those in the west and south it may mean more cloud than you might like, along with cooler airflows at times.
The next cold front for NZ is coming on Tuesday and will be even cooler – but short lived.

When are we going to get some decent weather for a change. Feel like it’s been all rain and wind for years. The weather should be much better at the time of the year.

January and February are more likely to have true summer weather in NZ. December can be very spring like.

Who keeps talking about drought? Maybe raise it with them. As far as we can see NZ is entering a drier phase even if not for all regions. Typically the rain doesn’t stop on Dec 1 – it fades over several weeks with local totals dropping. Think you’ll find just 2 months of no rain in NZ would lead to serious dry conditions and a jump in prices for fresh groceries… so hopefully NZ is finding the right balance in the weeks ahead – but December is usually spring-like weather wise. Over the past 15 years we’ve had a lot of changeable and messy Christmas and NYE forecasts in December.
