Here’s what is making the weather headlines this weekend….
DRY TODAY FOR MOST
Most of New Zealand is still dry today, a front straddling the far south breaks apart with showers for Southland clearing this morning. In the far north, Coromandel through to Northland can expect a few showers (especially in the east) with an easterly airflow freshening.
Tomorrow is when a front heads in from the north and you can find more details about this in our Sunday outlook below.
FOG TONIGHT, TEMPS IN THE 20’s NEXT WEEK
There is a possibility that overnight tonight there could be fog patches in the south and east of the South Island. It will depend on how much mid level cloud forms this evening in the same areas, if there are enough breaks in the cloud then this will allow cooling at the surface and fog may form. If cloud is too extensive fog is less likely.
Wednesday next week temperatures for the upper North Island and in the east will potentially get into the low 20’s, a sign winter is slowly slipping away.
WEATHER ON SUNDAY
An easterly quarter airflow lies over the country today, moving out of a high to our east and into a low in the Tasman Sea. A front coming out from this low moves down over the upper North Island.
North Island
Mostly cloudy for the upper North Island, a few showers especially in the east. Rain for Northland spreads into Auckland later in the evening then Bay Of Plenty overnight as a front pushes southwards. Rain clears Northland later in the day. Mostly sunny elsewhere but expect a few wisps of high cloud, rain later in the evening for Taranaki. Cloud thickens and lowers later in the day for most. East to northeasterly winds, gusty for the upper North Island.
South Island
Partly cloudy in the south and east, there could be some morning fog. From afternoon cloud starts to thicken up in the east with a few light showers or drizzle patches developing for Canterbury, perhaps later about eastern Marlborough. Cloud increases in the northwest (Tasman) with showers there in the evening. Mostly sunny for the West Coast, a few wisps of high cloud. East to northeasterly winds in the east, southeasterlies in the far south. Light winds for the West Coast.
