Here’s what is making the weather headlines this weekend….
COLD FRONT THIS WEEKEND
A cold front moves north over the South Island during the second half of today, reaching the North Island on Sunday.
Showers then rain move into the far south from this afternoon, moving through Canterbury later this evening and overnight. We get rain pushing northwards along the West Coast also, clearing from the south overnight.
Showers for the North Island on Sunday.
There is cold air so snow may lower to 300m overnight for the far south, 700 to 600m in Canterbury. The air gets a little colder during Sunday and even into Monday morning but at the same time the precipitation rates back off so while snow may get a little lower it may be a few flurries to nothing much. Any accumulations of note naturally will be higher up.
Snow flurries for the lower and eastern North Island may fall to around 700 or 600m on Monday but precipitation rates are quite low so any snow will be minimal.

WARM IN THE EAST MID NEXT WEEK
Temperatures will bounce back in the east Wed / Thu next week, even Tuesday should see some improvement after what will likely be a frosty start.
All one can say is enjoy, some settled weather is welcome.
Temperatures about the upper North Island are fairly consistent at the moment around the mid teens, only Monday does it dip a bit then we bounce back on Tuesday.
WEATHER ON SUNDAY
A southwesterly airflow lies over the country. A cold front pushes over the North Island, a trough representing some cold air moves onto the far south in the evening then moving northwards overnight.
North Island
Showers in the south and west, Hawkes Bay through to Bay Of Plenty is dry with sun but afternoon showers move in although Bay Of Plenty may remain fairly dry bar a few showers in the evening. Winds from the southwest, strong southerlies about Wellington and Wairarapa move northwards in the east from afternoon but weakening a little.
South Island
Showers in the south and east, rain for Canterbury this morning eases. Late afternoon or evening isolated showers for Canterbury may be heavy in spots with small hail then easing overnight. Sunny and dry for South Westland, the odd shower further north, overnight showers may become heavy for Buller with small hail. Dry with sun for Nelson and Marlborough then a few isolated showers start to creep in from afternoon, one or two may become heavy, perhaps some hail overnight for Tasman / Nelson. Snow flurries down to 300 or 200m in the south, 400 to 300m up into Canterbury. Around Tasman / Nelson is snow level sits around 700 / 600m in the evening, perhaps a touch lower overnight.
