Wednesday’s national forecast – Northwest airflow

A northwesterly airflow develops over the country today ahead of a few fronts to the southwest, one front feeds into South Westland bringing some heavy rain.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Any morning mist or fog clears then mostly sunny, some high cloud later in the day. Light winds then afternoon sea breezes.
Highs: 20-22

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
A mix of sun and cloud, cloud thickens later in the day. Chance of a shower or two from afternoon about Kapiti and Taranaki. Northwesterly winds.
Highs: 15-20

Eastern North Island

Sunny, winds from the north or northwest. Winds may tend northeast near the coast for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne in the afternoon.
Highs: 21-23

Wellington

Partly cloudy, north to northwesterly winds strengthen from afternoon.
Highs: 18-20

Marlborough & Nelson

Mostly sunny with some high cloud, mainly later. Northwesterly winds, winds from the southwest in the morning for Nelson.
Highs: 21-23

Canterbury

Sun and some high cloud, from afternoon expect rain way up in the high country close to the Main Divide. Northwesterly winds. Around dawn on Thursday southerlies develop with thickening cloud and a few light showers.
Highs: 20-22

West Coast

Mostly cloudy with the odd shower then turning to rain, heavy rain for Fiordland with a chance of thunder then slowly spreads northwards in the evening. Northwesterlies change west to southwest later in the day.
Highs: 16-18

Southland & Otago
Rain then breaking to some sun around midday, Otago is drier with only spits possible. Northwesterly winds freshen. Late afternoon or evening rain for Southland with a westerly change, a few showers for Otago overnight.
Highs: 20-22
