Wednesday’s national forecast – Heavy rain West Coast

A northerly airflow lies over New Zealand today with a couple of fronts lying across the South Island bringing heavy rain for the West Coast. Hot temperatures out east.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Cloudy areas and occasional sun, light showers at times in areas exposed to the east from Bay Of Plenty up through to eastern Northland. Breezy humid northeasterly winds.
Highs: 25-28

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
High cloud and some sun, mid level cloud catches Taranaki at times. Later in the evening some scattered rain moves in from the Tasman Sea. North to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 24-30

Eastern North Island

High cloud with sun at times, hot temperatures. North to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 28-31

Wellington

High cloud, scattered rain develops later in the evening. Breezy north to northwesterly winds, strong through Cook Strait.
Highs: 24-27

Marlborough & Nelson

Most cloudy, light rain for Nelson becomes more persistent from afternoon at which point scattered rain starts spreading over into Marlborough. North to northwesterly winds freshen during the day.
Highs: 21-25

Canterbury

Plenty of high cloud, spots of rain. Rain more persistent in the high country. Northerly winds pick up a bit after midday.
Highs: 26-29

West Coast

Rain with heavy falls, there may be some thunder. Blustery northeasterlies.
Highs: 21-22

Southland & Otago
Mostly cloudy, spits of rain. Rain may become heavy in the afternoon for areas closer to the western ranges. Northeasterly winds tend to the north after midday then southwesterly overnight.
Highs: 25-29
