A depression moves away to the east of the country today, expect rain or showers for many areas then clearing in the evening for the South Island. There is a frost risk overnight in the South Island as winds become calm.

Auckland & Northland
Strong west to southwest winds with the odd shower, showers more likely about Auckland. Later in the evening or overnight a period of more widespread showers moves through.
Highs: 16-17

Bay Of Plenty, Waikato & Central North Island
Morning rain with breezy northwesterlies, rain eases to showers around midday with northwesterlies changing brisk southwest. Showers clear in the evening.
Highs: 14-18

Eastern North Island
Morning high cloud with northerly winds, a southwest change late morning or around midday brings showers which clear later in the evening. About coastal Wairarapa south to southwest winds will be quite strong in the afternoon possibly gusting to gale force at times then easing in the evening.
Highs: 17-18

Western North Island
Periods of rain with brisk southerlies developing in the morning, rain clears in the evening with southerlies easing overnight.
Highs: 11-13

Wellington
Morning rain eases to showers which then clear in the evening, strong to gale southerly winds ease in the evening then die out at night.
Highs: 10-11

Nelson
Morning rain clears then becoming mostly sunny, southerly winds ease in the afternoon and may even tend northerly. Light winds overnight.
Highs: 14

Marlborough
Rain easing to showers in the morning which clear by evening, strong south to southwesterly winds die out at night with skies becoming clear then. Snow to 800m at first lowering to 600m in the afternoon then clearing by evening. Risk of a light frost overnight.
Highs: 11-12

Canterbury
Rain eases clearing in the afternoon, sunny spells then develop and skies become clear in the evening. Cool southwesterly winds die out in the evening also. Expect snow to 400m, possibly lowering briefly to 300m at times. Frosty overnight.

West Coast
Morning showers clear then becoming mostly sunny in the afternoon, breezy southeasterly winds ease after midday.
Highs: 14-15

Coastal Otago
Early showers clear then sunny spells increase to become mostly sunny by midday, southerly breezes ease tending northerly late afternoon. High cloud thickens overnight.
High: 11

Central Otago
Chance of an early shower then becoming mostly sunny in the morning, light southeasterlies tend northerly later in the afternoon. High cloud thickens overnight.
High: 13-14

Southland
Mostly sunny with light winds tending northerly by midday, some evening high cloud thickens overnight.
High: 12
