A depression west of New Zealand begins to move eastwards onto the country today, expect unsettled weather for most with rain or showers. Thunderstorms this afternoon for northern regions.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato
Sunny and cloudy spells with northwest breezes, chance of an early shower then dry. By midday isolated showers develop becoming heavy and thundery in the afternoon especially about Auckland and the Waikato then easing later in the evening, could be isolated torrential downpours with storms that do occur. Thunderstorms could contain areas of hail too.

CNI & BOP
Morning rain about the BOP eases to the odd shower, a few sunny spells break through also. Winds from the northwest. About the CNI expect sunny and cloudy periods with the odd isolated shower, there may be a heavy shower or two in the afternoon and evening then easing at night.

Eastern North Island
Mostly sunny with light winds, some cloud at times. There may be some morning rain about Gisborne which clears. A few showers may spill into southern Wairarapa later in the evening from the west.
Highs: 18-20

Western North Island
A period of early morning rain clears revealing sunny spells and some cloud with northerlies. Rain moves back in around midday for areas north of Taranaki and further south towards Kapiti in the evening. Rain in the afternoon and evening respectively could be heavy and possibly thundery.
Highs: 16-17

Wellington
A period of early morning rain clears revealing sunny spells and some cloud with northerlies. Rain moves back in during the evening with northwesterlies picking up.
Highs: 14-15

Nelson
Cloudy with light winds, the odd shower. Rain moves in during the afternoon with a few heavy falls possible then easing at night.
Highs: 15-16

Marlborough
A period of early morning rain clears revealing sunny spells and some cloud with light northerlies. Southerlies pick up from evening with a few showers moving back in.
High: 16

Canterbury
Cloudy with southerly breezes picking up from morning, a few early showers clear about North Canterbury however remaining for Mid and South Canterbury. In the afternoon southerlies pick up with rain spreading north along the foothills then spreading outwards towards the coast in the evening.
High: 12-13

West Coast
Dry for areas south of the Glaciers, expect areas of cloud and light winds picking up from the southeast late afternoon. Cloudy further north with some afternoon rain, winds from the east. Rain clears later in the evening as winds tend more southerly.
High: 16-17

Southland & Otago
Cloudy with light winds in the morning, drizzle patches. Some rain develops in the afternoon as southwesterlies freshen. Rain then eases at night.
Highs: 10-12
