Strong west to northwesterly winds lie over the country today, gales for many South Island regions especially in the south and east.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Mainly sunny with westerly quarter winds, any morning cloud breaks away.
Highs: 19-22

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Mostly sunny with west to northwesterly winds increasing in the afternoon becoming gusty, cloud thickens in the evening. Winds change southwest overnight with showers.
Highs: 17-22

Eastern North Island

Sunny with northwesterly winds, gusty after midday about the Wairarapa.
Highs: 24-26

Wellington

Sunny areas with strong northerly winds, winds gust to gale at times after midday.
High: 16

Marlborough & Nelson

Mostly sunny with some high cloud from afternoon, northwesterly winds becoming strong in the afternoon possibly gusting to gale at times.
Highs: 27-28

Canterbury

Plenty of high cloud with strong northwesterly winds, gale force at times especially inland. Winds change southwest later in the evening although remaining mainly dry.
Highs: 25-27

West Coast

Mostly cloudy with gusty northwesterly winds, showers about South Westland turning to rain in the afternoon then spreading northwards in the evening. Winds change southwest later in the day.
Highs: 15-16

Southland & Otago

High cloud thickens in the morning with strong northwesterly winds rising to gale by midday, areas of rain develop in the afternoon for most but not reaching coastal Otago till later in the evening. Winds change westerly by evening.
Highs: 16-23
