A warm front passes over the South Island early this morning then a cold front moves onto the lower South Island during this morning moving northwards to reach Auckland / Northland overnight. Preceding the front winds are gusty from the north then tending more westerly behind the front. Finally later this afternoon / evening a trough moves onto the lower South Island bringing a southwest change and heavy showers.

Northland
Mostly cloudy skies with northeasterlies tending northerly after midday, chance of a shower about early afternoon then again later this evening / overnight. Northerlies change southwest overnight.

Auckland

Cloudy areas and north to northeasterly winds, picking up a little this
afternoon. There could be sunny spell or two about also then becoming totally
cloudy by evening. Chance of a brief light shower or two at times from afternoon
otherwise mainly dry, this evening the chance of a shower or two increases a
little then overnight a spell of showers can be expected as northwesterlies
change southwest. Showers will be fairly patchy in nature overnight as the front
associated with them weakens as it moves north over the upper North
Island.

Bay Of Plenty

Periods of cloud and a few sunny areas, cloud thickens from mid to late
afternoon with northerly winds picking up a little. A few light showers from
later this evening then some brief overnight rain with northerlies changing
southwest, rain clears early on Thursday.

Periods of cloud and a few sunny areas, cloud thickens this afternoon with
northerly winds picking up a little. A few light showers from this evening then
some overnight rain with northerlies changing southwest, rain clears before or
around dawn on Thursday.

Central North Island

Periods of cloud and a few sunny areas, cloud thickens this afternoon with
northerly winds picking up a little. A few light showers from this evening then
some overnight rain with northerlies changing southwest, rain clears before dawn
on Thursday.

Eastern North Island

Sunny areas and thickening cloud from this morning, northerly winds pick up
this afternoon especially about the Wairarapa. Later this evening or around
midnight some rain spills into the Wairarapa then moves further north
overnight.

Western North Island

Thickening high cloud with northwesterly winds (brisk northerlies about
Taranaki), the odd shower about Kapiti and around Taranaki from morning
otherwise mainly dry elsewhere. There may be a light shower elsewhere from
afternoon then later this evening rain becoming persistent for most for a time
before clearing overnight.

Wellington

Cloudy with spots of rain possible at times from this morning, northerly
winds becoming strong this afternoon. Later this evening rain becoming more
persistent for a time then clearing around midnight as winds tend gusty
northwest.

Nelson

Morning rain possibly heavy then easing by midday, northerly winds becoming
strong in the afternoon. Rain picks up again in intensity early evening then
clearing mid evening as northerlies tend northwest. As rain clears cloud breaks
away.

Marlborough

Cloudy with spells of rain, especially early this morning then again early
in the evening. Northerly winds becoming strong by midday with winds possibly
gusting to gale at times. Rain clears around mid evening as winds tend more
northwest, cloud breaks away.

Canterbury

Thick high cloud with northerlies strengthening this morning, a few spells
of early rain clearing then mid afternoon a few further spells of rain move
through before clearing with sunny areas developing. Winds tend warmer northwest
mid to late afternoon. Winds from the north then northwest will be fairly strong
especially inland, a risk of gales about exposed areas is possible. Overnight a
southwest change brings showers possibly heavy near the coast.

West Coast

Cloudy with rain, heavy about South Westland then becoming heavy in North
Westland around midday. Chance of a thunderstorm. Gusty north to northeasterly
winds. Rain eases to showers about South Westland in the afternoon and further
north in the evening with winds tending more westerly.

Coastal Otago

Thick high cloud with early spells of rain clearing, breezy
northeasterlies. A few further spells of rain possible around midday then
clearing in the afternoon with sunny areas developing, winds tend northwest.
This evening winds change brisk southwest bringing showers possibly heavy with
thunderstorms then clearing overnight.

Cloudy with rain moving in this morning, northerly winds. Rain clears
around midday or early afternoon with sunny areas developing, winds tend
northwest. Later this evening winds change southwest with further showers which
clear overnight.

Southland

Rain develops this morning with northerly winds then easing before midday,
mid afternoon winds change southwest with showers possibly heavy at times with
thunderstorms then clearing around midnight.
