A showery southwesterly airflow lies over the country today, showers could be heavy with thunderstorms and hail for the east of the South Island this afternoon / evening.

Northland
Sunny spells and periods of cloud with freshening westerlies, winds tend a little more southwest late afternoon / evening. Chance of a shower, mainly in the west during the afternoon.
Highs: 20-21

Auckland

Periods of cloud, a few brief showers late afternoon / evening as brisk
westerlies change southwest.
High: 19

Bay Of Plenty

Sunny spells with westerly winds, there could be a spell of brief showers
late afternoon / evening.
High: 19

Waikato & Central North Island

Sunny spells and increasing cloud during the morning, northwesterly winds
freshen. A few showers develop in the afternoon as winds tend more westerly,
showers then clear in the evening.
Highs: 16-18

Eastern North Island

Areas of high cloud with freshening northwesterlies, a few brief showers
move through late afternoon / evening then clearing.
Highs: 21-23

Western North Island

Becoming cloudy in the morning with northwesterlies freshening, showers
move in towards midday. Winds tend more gusty westerly in the afternoon and
showers clear around midnight.
High: 17

Wellington

Morning showers with strong northwesterlies, a risk of gales. Sunny spells
in the afternoon with winds easing a little, still strong and gusty though.
Later in the evening winds change southerly with a period of showers possibly
heavy with hail.
Highs: 17-18

Nelson

Morning showers with brisk westerlies, sunny spells develop in the
afternoon with winds tending more southwesterly.
Highs: 17-18

Marlborough
Mostly sunny
with gusty west to northwesterly winds, there may be some morning cloud with the
chance of a shower any of which clear. A change to southwesterlies in the
evening.

High: 20

Canterbury

Some morning cloud with a chance of a shower then clearing and becoming
mostly sunny with breezy westerly winds. A late afternoon / evening southwest
change brings showers possibly heavy with thunderstorms and hail (especially
Banks Peninsula southwards along the coast) then clearing overnight.
Highs: 17-19

West Coast

Early rain with heavy falls eases to showers, showers possibly heavy at
times again from midday then easing later in the evening. A risk of hail at
times too. Brisk west to southwest winds.
High: 13

Coastal Otago

Morning sunny spells with breezy westerlies, showers by midday possibly
heavy with thuderstorms and hail then clearing late afternoon. Winds tend brisk
WSW in the afternoon.
High: 14

Central Otago

Showers, a chance of hail at times then clearing in the evening. Brisk
westerly winds.
Highs: 9-10

Southland

Mostly cloudy skies with showers, heavy at times with a risk of hail /
thunder then easing in the evening. Brisk westerly winds.
Highs: 10-11
