Private forecaster WeatherWatch.co.nz has signed a deal with Vector to continue providing its electricity distribution business with advanced weather forecasting.

Adverse weather events increase the risk of trees crashing into power lines and cars colliding with power poles in the wet. Vector relies on accurate weather information to plan their response ahead of time to minimise disruption to customers.   

WeatherWatch Head Weather Analyst, Philip Duncan said that due to the unique coastal and hilly layout of Auckland, accurate weather forecasting for the region can be particularly challenging. 

“WeatherWatch has a unique understanding of Auckland specific weather data as well as extensive local knowledge and experience. We’re delighted Vector will continue to leverage WeatherWatch’s expertise to provide insight and understanding into specific wind tunnels, and to better understand potential impacts on the power supply.†

Marko Simunac, Vector’s Head of Network Field Services, said the deal with WeatherWatch complements the company’s existing weather analysis capability.

“By combining insights from WeatherWatch together with other information sources, and modelling these to better understand the potential impact on our network, we are increasing our ability to respond more quickly to power outages during major weather events, with the ultimate goal of lessening the impact this has on our customers.â€
