Weather headlines (x3) for this weekend: High pressure coming up, Temperature Anomaly, Weather on Sunday

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today.

PLENTY OF HIGH PRESSURE COMING UP

From this weekend through to next weekend, expect plenty of high pressure. We do have a few weak fronts moving through from time to time and a few lows approaching from the north but the overall picture is mainly settled and dry.

A low moving in from the north later next week around Friday / Saturday may bring a higher chance of rain or showers to the North Island.

The result of this high pressure is a map like we have below, this “precipitation percentage of normal” map is for the next seven days. This map shows the lack or excess of rain we would normal expect at this time of year. Red is drier than normal and clearly it is looking quite dry.

TEMPERATURE ANOMALY

While it is looking quite dry, temperatures are expected to be right on average for the next seven days. So while not much rain is falling, evapotranspiration rates should at least be average overall rather than high.

WEATHER ON SUNDAY

A large high lies across the country bringing mainly settled weather, a weak trough pushes over the North Island moving around the top of this high and this will bring a few showers.

The North Island is looking mostly cloudy, a few light showers in the east for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne with easterly winds. The upper North Island sees a few showers first thing for Bay Of Plenty and Coromandel then spreading elsewhere in the west during the morning and afternoon as east to northeasterly winds freshen. Wellington stays dry all day long.

The West Coast of the South Island is mostly sunny with any morning cloud breaking away, Southland and Otago have sunny weather with coastal cloud possible, especially about North Otago. Canterbury is a bit cloudy with some morning drizzle possible, afternoon sunny spells may break through though with east to northeast breezes. Nelson and Marlborough have morning cloud then afternoon sun breaks through with light winds tending onshore.
