Remarkably cold conditions gripped parts of the USA with minus 34 degrees being recorded over parts of the northeast.The cold is expected to ease a little this week.

Parts of England are still in an icy polar grip with daytime highs struggling to get above freezing in places. Ice and snow in places has frozen under clear skies making roads treacherous in places.
