As predicted on Monday a nasty low has rapidly developed in the past 24 hours over the Tasman Sea and today it will cross the country.
The low is expected to cross the upper South Island or central New Zealand area sometime this afternoon or evening. It’s quite complicated – with secondary lows forming as the main one starts to fizzle out. In short – the energy is simply being transferred from west coast to east coast over the next 12 to 24 hours.
That means heavy rain will affect both the west and the east – and blustery winds will too.
However as the low crosses the country today not everyone will have stormy weather.
In the north the rain will be fairly standard – with sunny spells moving in later and gustier winds too.
No severe weather where I am?
It’s important to note the most severe weather is near the centre of the low – the further to the north or south you are, the less intense it will be overall. General speaking most of the roughest weather will be through central areas of NZ, north of Otago and south of Waikato.
We’ll update you across the day – and this morning we’re keen to hear about weather conditions where you are – post a comment below and share your weather observations/conditions with other WeatherWatch.co.nz readers!

We had a heavy shower not long ago and it is very windy right now. It definitely feels stormy. If Northland isn’t meant to be hit with this storm too hard then I worry about what is happening down south.
Cheers,

Blustery warm wind with spits of rain from the North(ish) here. Poor buggers at the Growers Market trying to keep their canopies from taking off.
