Sub-tropical winds, powerful high pressure and a Tasman Sea low are all combining over New Zealand this week bringing much warmer than average temperatures, heavy rain at times, and winds up to gale force. The set-up remains in place from today until next Monday, May 8th.
All of the country will be warmer than average this week with a month’s worth of rain (or more) falling in the north and west of both main islands.
Australia has more typical Autumn weather, mostly affected the south east.
We have your forecast out to Saturday – and don’t forget, our next ClimateWatch update is out later today!

Are we still in La Nina, this seems very similar with large blocking high to the East???

Hi there Andrew, please take a look at our very latest ClimateWatch update and Climate video as it covers this (and was only just published after you posted). La Nina is over – we are in a neutral pattern which means it can be messy/chaotic. Blocking high pressure east of NZ is making it incredibly mild (and the high is stalled which is why it’s so warm) – so it still very much feels like La Nina here in NZ, but not so much elsewhere in the South West Pacific. Video and news update covers this all for you 🙂
– Cheers WW Team
