A big low will rapidly form over the next 24 hours in the Tasman Sea then will cross NZ over Wednesday and Thursday – but will be weakening by then.
The system is big enough to bring in heavy rain into both islands – but especially the upper South Island and from Waikato southwards in the North Island.
After this event we have more windy weather through the upcoming weekend.
