Unsettled weather returns today and continues over the weekend as a low pressure zone moves around the North Island. With nearby high pressure it will ramp up the easterly quarter winds from later today through until the start of next week for some.
The wind and rain should slide southwards over the weekend with drier and calmer spells returning to the north.
Next week west to south-west winds return out of Australia, where high pressure is mostly dominating – but cold fronts continue to brush the coastal areas of southern states.

Interesting information from our government in 2011. NIWA’s Dr Philip Boyd on geoengineering and the research which won him and a team of scientists from NIWA and Otago University the 2011 Prime Minister’s Science Prize. NIWA, the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, is a Crown Research Institute established in 1992. https://niwa.co.nz/videos/dr-philip-boyd-on-geoengineering

Very interesting, and backs up what we keep repeating – Geo-engineering is not actually occurring in NZ, but there is local research. It’s all about research from a NZ perspective and working out the negatives of actually doing anything. One thing NZers should be proud of is our cautious approach. In Australia they are experimenting with very small scale things on a local basis and it will be interesting to see where that leads. This has no correlation to how we forecast the weather, but it’s interesting nonetheless.
