NZ and NSW both have heavy rain coming up, but NZ has the highest totals with over 200mm forecast in some parts of the Upper North Island and the West Coast as a sub-tropical low drops southwards and interacts with a powerful high east of NZ.
We often call this set-up a “squash zone” event due to the windy nor’easters we get for several days. It’s also known as an “atmospheric river” as it funnels moisture-rich sub-tropical air directly into us for days on end.
The low itself will unravel over NZ next week. We go through the rain risks for New Zealand – but also for New South Wales which also has a rain event with over 125mm on the way.
Today’s video covers the forecast right through until Friday of next week.
