VIDEO: North Island hits 40C, South Island has more rain – Cooler change coming for everyone

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Monday saw temperatures reach 40C through one inland part of Gisborne while others sweltered in the late 30s. The heatwave from Australia has one more day left and by Wednesday it will be off our shores.

Meanwhile more heavy rain moves around the South Island with slips and flooding possible.

Rain eases on Wednesday also. Wednesday is also the day a cooler change from the Southern Ocean cross NZ – and lingers until early next week.
