This short week kicks off with sub-tropical winds for the North Island and southerlies for the South Island and this merges mid week over NZ.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, a Tasman Sea low crosses the North Island with a burst of wind and rain – some heavy rain affects the top of the South Island too. Severe weather is expected, especially at higher elevations as heavy rain turns to heavy snow.
This mix of warm and cold may also spark a few northern thunderstorms on Wednesday.
Across Thursday, Friday and Saturday the country is under another windy cold south to south west flow with heavy snow on the mountains and ranges. A big high rolls in by Sunday/Monday.
