Almost all of New Zealand will be affected by rough weather today in some shape or form as a deep low in the Southern Ocean continues to blast us with thunderstorms, gales, squalls and snow.
The heaviest showers will mostly target western parts of the country from Taranaki southwards but heavy showers, some with hail, are possible as far north as Auckland and western Northland this morning.
In the deep south cold air blowing through Southland and Lakes District will mean sleet to sea level, along with hail, and snow to fairly low levels too. Roads may be affected and drivers are advised to check highway conditions before heading out – and to carry chains where possible.
Again eastern parts of New Zealand will remain fairly dry and sunny – but winds are again likely to be the main feature with strong to gale force westerlies pushing through.

Normally we ask people to write in and tell us how stormy it is where they are – which we’re still keen for – but we’re also interested in hearing from those who actually have the sunny, settled weather today. Which part of NZ is sheltered most from this storm? – post a comment below and tell us!

We live in Kerikeri, its nice & sunny to day & quite warm though you do need a jumper. Sun is out & there is breeze but not a gale at all. Just seems like a normal winters day with blue sky & clouds.

I live in Takapuna, on Auckland’s North Shore. We seem to have escaped the worst of the weather, except for the incessant wind – gale force winds all the time! We had a big electric storm on Saturday night, but otherwise have had heavy squally downpours every now and again. Very cold today, but sunny, as was yesterday.

It is 14C at the moment. With the sun shining & light winds for now. That might change later as it is just gone past midday here.

I am sheltered from the NW or N here, only a few gusts the last couple of days and rather sunny at times though a little windier today from the west for today as it slowly veers around.
