A northerly airflow lies over the country today, changing to the west behind a front moving in from the west over the South Island.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Partly cloudy, the odd isolated shower, especially from afternoon moving in from the west, perhaps even a rogue heavy shower with thunder. North to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 18-19

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Partly cloudy with a few showers, there may be the odd isolated heavy fall from afternoon with thunder, mainly for Taranaki. Widespread rain for a time later in the evening as a front passes over. Northerlies change westerly at night.
Highs: 13-18

Eastern North Island

Some high cloud, breaking away late afternoon or evening, a few spits of rain especially north of Mahia Peninsula. Northerlies change northwest in the evening.
Highs: 18-21

Wellington

Cloudy, a few spits or showers especially in the north. Rain a little more likely overnight as a front moves through. Strong north to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 16-17

Marlborough & Nelson

Sun and thickening high cloud. Some rain spreads in during the evening, at first for Nelson then Marlborough, clearing overnight. Breezy north to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 16-18

Canterbury

High cloud with northerlies, becoming breezy in the afternoon. During the afternoon rain develops in the high country spreading from the west as a front moves through, a few spits may spread further eastwards. Conditions clearing up during the evening as winds tend lighter northwest.
Highs: 14-18

West Coast

Showers, rain with heavy falls develop about Fiordland in the morning reaching Buller in the evening as northerlies change westerly. Rain eases.
Highs: 13-16

Southland & Otago
Morning sun, afternoon rain or a few showers as a front passes over with northeasterlies changing northwest. Drying up by evening.
Highs: 13-17
