Westerlies are the key wind direction today, showers will at some point affect western areas south of Taranaki during the day. Early showers clear about the Canterbury coast in the South Island while in Southland showers clear there by afternoon. Expect mostly sunny conditions otherwise out east, a few brief showers may move through Wairarapa however in the afternoon.

Upper North Island

Breezy west to southwest winds today strong at times about western Waikato and Auckland then easing later in the evening, cloudy areas with some sun at times. Bay Of Plenty will see winds with less strength from the west although still breezy mainly in the west of the district, mostly sunny with some cloud there. Sunny in Gisborne with light winds.
HIGHS: 22-24, mid 20’s about Bay Of Plenty and Gisborne.

Lower North Island

Strong westerlies with mostly cloudy skies in the west, the odd shower at times more likely from afternoon. Sunny in Hawkes Bay with westerly breezes, about Wairarapa expect areas of cloud and there may be a few showers move through in the afternoon with a wind shift to the south.
HIGHS: 19-21 in the West, 21-24 in the east

Upper South Island

Rain on the West Coast north of the Glaciers with breezy westerlies, rain clearing mid afternoon with winds easing and a few sunny breaks coming through. Cloud and rain developing later overnight however with northerlies. A few brief morning showers may move through Nelson and coastal North Canterbury through to Banks Peninsula then clearing with sunny areas developing, west to southwest breezes. Northeasterlies develop in the afternoon along the Canterbury and Marlborough coastlines.
HIGHS: 17-18 on the West Coast. 22 for Nelson, 22-23 in Canterbury and Marlborough

Lower South Island

The odd shower south of the Glaciers on the West Coast and about Southland clear around midday, winds breezy from the west or northwest. Chance of a few sunny areas in the afternoon mainly about Southland, by evening rain develops on the West Coast with strong northerlies, cloud spreads elsewhere.
