A northerly airflow increases today ahead of a deep intense low which moves over the South Island later this evening.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Sunny spells and increasing cloud, overnight rain. North to northeasterly winds freshen.
Highs: 18-20

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Sunny areas and thickening high cloud, rain develops overnight becoming heavy for Taranaki. Freshening northwesterly winds rising to gale about coastal parts later in the evening or overnight.
Highs: 17-19

Eastern North Island
Sunny areas and increasing high cloud, north to northeasterly winds freshen from afternoon.
Highs: 21-23

Wellington
Mostly cloudy with rain overnight, gusty north to northwesterly winds rising to gale in the evening.
High: 16

Marlborough & Nelson
Sunny areas and thickening high cloud, rain develops in the evening or overnight. Strengthening north to northwesterly winds from afternoon rising to gale in the evening.
Highs: 16-18

Canterbury
Thickening high cloud, a few showers late evening / overnight with heavy rain in the high country. Increasing north to northeasterly winds, strong to gale about Banks Peninsula northwards later in the evening.
Highs: 15-17

West Coast
Mostly cloudy, showers about South Westland turning to rain in the afternoon then spreading northwards. Rain heavy by evening for all with torrential falls possible then easing overnight as gusty northerlies change strong west to southwest.
Highs: 14-15

Southland & Otago
Sunny areas and increasing high cloud, rain develops in the evening, possibly heavy for a time then easing overnight as northerlies change gusty southwest.
Highs: 16-18
